Women's Jobs
-Taking care of household, husband, and family
-Cooking, milking cows, watching the children, making clothing
-Backcountry: worked along with their husbands in fields, killing livestock, etc.
-Cities: maids, cooks, nurses, midwives, seamstresses (some were even butchers, shoemakers, silversmiths, and printers)
-Women played a significant role in colonial life in Rhode Island. They did far more than just cooking and cleaning; they produced clothes (which took hours just to do so). Women had seasonal tasks in the autumn; they made apple butter & cider, and helped with livestock (farming). When the climate was colder, they made candles and brewed beer (most people drank beer rather than water). In the spring, they would plant a variety of vegetables and herbs. In transition from spring to summer, cheese making was common. Different women played different roles in colonial Rhode Island. For example, some were good at cheese making, whereas others were be good at producing candles. They trade and sell, making the economy balanced.
