HOW HE GOT THERE- This great religious leader and the founder of Rhode Island advocated the separation of church and state in Colonial America. He believed in religious freedom and tolerance. He also diaproved the practice of confiscating land from Native Americans. His different view points got him banned from being a puritan in Massachuestts. He has always thought the Massachusetts government was too powerful. He was always a rebel that controversed the puritans. Some of his actions include, not filling the position of minister in the church of Boston, declaring the colony’s charter to be invalid because it was not issued by the true owners of the land (native americans). He always argued and was against the Puritan laws that controlled the populations.
BELIEFS HE SPREAD TO RHODE ISLAND- Williams and his group settled on Narragansett Bay, where they purchased land from the Narragansett Indians an settled to establish Rhode Island. He used the principles of religious liberty and separation of church and state to run the colony.
IMPORTANCE- After his death, Williams’ notion of a “wall of separation” between church and state inspired the founders of the United States, who incorporated it into the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights. He was one of the first to call for the separation of church and state – a law which now forbids the government to use any religion to influence the people.
