Children in Rhode Island could choose between education, and becoming an apprentice. Some choose education since knowledge meant power, while others chose to become an apprentice and inherit a family member's plantation. In Rhode Island, all towns with 50 or more families had to hire a school teacher or a tutor, whereas towns with 100 or more families had to set up a school. |
