Rhode Island, is only about 48 miles long and 37 miles wide, being the smallest colony in the 13 colonies.( However, this may not be a bad thing, this reduces conflict and is easier to control and govern) Despite its small area, Rhode Island is known as the “Ocean State,” with over 400 miles of coastline. (This adds greatly to our economy)
The Rhode Island colony consisted of rolling hills, lowlands, and mountains thick with trees and rivers. The climate played a major role in economy; the colonists endured cold winters, and mild summers. However, one major problem in the colonies were diseases such as malaria and yellow fever, which would spread depending on the climate (an abundance of heat would increase the chances of getting such diseases). Fortunately, this wasn't a common issue in Rhode Island due to the mild summers and cold climate, in general. |
