This influential religious leader was also a founder of Rhode Island. She believed in equal rights in men and women, and had her own way of interpreting the Bible, which led to conflicts and controversies in Massachusetts.
IN MASSACHUSETTS- She was a devout puritan who held meeting after church to discuss the sermons (the words of God). Puritans believed that men and woman were not equal, as women didn't have the right to explain God's law. The other puritan leaders grew mad and put her on trial with the general court. When she claimed that god spoke directly to her: "by the voice of his own spirit to my soul", everyone just grew frustrated and ordered her out of the colony. After going back to New Hampshire, she fled to Rhode Island, where everyone had more equal rights.
